Welcome to Mareeba
This region was once the heart of the country's main tobacco-growing region, but these days Mareeba has turned its soil to more wholesome produce, with fruit orchards and distilleries in addition to the coffee farms. Mareeba's landscape differs dramatically from the higher-altitude central Tablelands and this is the last major town before making the long trips north to Cape York or west to Chillagoe.
Mareeba ('Meeting of the Waters') is the traditional home of the Muluridji people, whose territory stretched north towards Mt Molloy and Mt Carbine. Other tribes in this area included the Bar-Barrum and Walkamin peoples living to the west and Kuku Yalanji to the north.
