Welcome to Childers
Surrounded by lush green fields and the rich red soil of an area traditionally owned by the Dunaburra of the Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) people, Childers is a charming little town. Easily imagined in its formative Victorian years, its main street is lined with tall, shady trees and lattice-trimmed historical buildings. Most notable are the early-20th-century Federal Hotel, and the rebuilt Palace Hotel, burnt down by an arsonist in 2000 and now home to a memorial to the 15 backpackers that perished in the blaze. Backpackers still flock to Childers for fruit-picking and farm work.
