Bicycle

Magnetic Island is ideal for cycling, although some of the hills can be hard going. Most places to stay rent bikes for around $20 per day, and many offer them free to guests.

Bus

Sunbus (www.sunbus.com.au/magnetic-island/) ploughs between Picnic and Horseshoe Bays, meeting all ferries and stopping at major accommodation places. A day pass covering all zones is $7.20, or you can include it in your ferry ticket price. Be sure to talk to the bus drivers, who love chatting about everything to do with the island.

Moke & Scooter

Moke- (‘topless’ car) and scooter-rental places abound. You’ll need to be over 21 years old, have a current driver’s licence and leave a credit-card deposit. Scooter hire starts at around $40 per day, Mokes at about $75. Try Tropical Topless Car Rentals for a classic Moke, or Roadrunner Scooter Hire for scooters and trail bikes.
