This excursion follows the River Derwent to Curringa Farm, an award winning, sheep and cropping farm, Then a visit to Mt. Field National Park rainforest, where one can experience the magnificence of the majestic Russell Falls on a day trip from Hobart. Walk through one of the wildlife parks and then wander around the historic village of Richmond. This small group tour, limited to 14 passengers, allows for a more customized experience with your expert guide.
Depart Hobart and travel north for one hour up the Derwent River Valley to Curringa Farm, a 750-acre award-winning sheep and cropping farm situated near Hamilton in the Southern Midlands. Upon arrival, experience sheep shearing, working sheep dogs, forest walks, and river views. Much of the morning will be spent here, culminating in a barbecue lunch for groups of 10 or more. Smaller groups will dine at a restaurant or hotel in Hamilton.After lunch, continue to Russell Falls, a picturesque cascading waterfall in Mt. Field National Park. A 10-minute walk through the rain forest reveals a variety of beautiful vegetation, including dogwood, musk, and myrtle, as well as towering swamp gums — one of the tallest flowering plants on earth. You might even catch a glimpse of local wildlife, such as wallabies and duck-billed platypuses.On the return to New Norfolk, stop at the Salmon Ponds and Trout Hatchery where you can take a walk back in time amongst the historical buildings and hatchery, which has been in operation since 1864. The hatchery is set within its original parkland “leisure garden” of trees, hedges, and lawns, and it surrounds a large pond brimming with trout and salmon. Learn about the annual cycle of fish breeding activities from displays throughout the area.The final activity of the day will be a visit to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary or Zoodoo Zoo (optional), where you can observe Tasmanian wildlife in its natural surroundings.
