There are plenty of opportunities to get outdoors in this neck of the woods, including hiking trails and canoeing on the Bellingen River.
Experienced bushwalkers are fond of the Slingbys Trail and Syndicate Ridge Walking Track, a strenuous 15km (eight-hour) walk from Gleniffer to the Dorrigo Plateau following the route of a tram line once used by timber cutters. There’s a very steep 1km climb on the way up. To get to the start of the trail head to Gleniffer, 12km north of Bellingen town, and take Gordonville Rd across the Never Never River and turn right into Adams Lane. The walking track commences at the first gate.
