Wybalenna Historic Site

Historic Site in Flinders Island

A few piles of bricks, the chapel and cemetery are all that remain of this misguided settlement built to ‘care for’ relocated mainland Tasmanian Aboriginal people, operating between 1829 and 1834. Eighty-seven people died here from poor food, disease and despair – among them was Manalargena, chief of the Ben Lomond tribe, whose headstone can be seen here. The site is on Aboriginal land: be respectful.
