Getting There & Away
Four main roads lead in from the coast: the Palmerston Hwy from Innisfail, Gillies Hwy (turn-off just before Gordonvale), Kennedy Hwy (known locally as the Kuranda Range) from Smithfield, and Rex Range Rd between Mossman and Port Douglas. Though there are frequent buses from Cairns to the main towns on the Tablelands, it's worth hiring your own wheels to fully explore the area.
Trans North has regular bus services connecting Cairns with various towns on the Tablelands, including Kuranda ($6.70, 30 minutes), Mareeba ($19.60, one hour), Atherton ($25.30, 1¾ hours) and Herberton/Ravenshoe ($32/37.40, two/2½ hours, Monday, Wednesday, Friday).
John's Kuranda Bus runs a service between Cairns and Kuranda two to five times daily ($5, 30 minutes). Departs Lake Street Transit Centre.
