Historic Buildings

Near the foreshore is Albany's historic precinct. Take a stroll down Stirling Tce – noted for its Victorian shopfronts, Courthouse and Old Post Office – and up York St to St John's Anglican Church. A guided walking-tour brochure is available from the visitor centre.

Beaches

East of the town centre, the beautiful Middleton and Emu Beaches face King George Sound and share one long stretch of family-friendly sand. In winter, you'll often see pods of mother whales and their calves here. Head around Emu Point to Oyster Harbour for swimming pontoons and even calmer waters.

A clifftop walking track hugs much of the waterfront between the town centre and Middleton Beach. Boardwalks continue along Emu Beach.

Wineries

Albany is part of the Great Southern wine-growing region, and there are four wineries dotted around the area. Don't miss the following:

  • Oranje Tractor Small organic winery, good riesling and sauvignon blanc and sparkling varieties, plus WWOOFing opportunities.
  • Wignalls Wines Family-run winery renowned for pinot noir. Also good cabernet merlot, shiraz, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc.
  • Montgomery's Hill Excellent shiraz and cabernet sauvignon; cheese platters served alongside wines.
