Wombat rescued by Tasmanian fishermen 250m from shore
A wombat was rescued on Monday by two fishermen more than 250m offshore at Woods Lake in Tasmania's central highlands.
The pair were looking for somewhere sheltered to fish when they noticed something moving in the water. Thinking at first it was a platypus they moved closer to take a look. As they approached they thought it must be a rat so they got quite a surprise when they found the animal struggling in the water was in fact a wombat. The men used a net to rescue the distressed animal. They have no idea how the wombat ended up so far from the shore but said that it did not appear to be injured.
