Wife crash-lands plane after taking controls from her ill husband
A woman who had no previous flying experience crashed-landed a plane her husband was piloting before he took ill and subsequently died.
The wife took over the flying of the ultralight aircraft when her husband lost consciousness, forcing her - with no previous flight experience - to land the plane near Seville Airport in Spain.
Although she suffered multiple contusion and burns, she survived the crash when the plane went up in flames on landing, according to a spokesman for the emergency services.
The Irish Times reports that the pilot died although it was still not clear if he did so before or during the landing. The journal.ie said that Spanish media had reported that the two occupants of the plane were a married couple.
The woman was guided by air traffic controllers who assured the woman that she was up for the task, stressing to her that she could get down safely.
The plane crashed-landed about 3km away from the beginning of the runway at Seville airport, according to Spain’s airport authority AENA.
The accident forced the airport to close for two hours with a number of flights being diverted to Jerez de la Frontera, a nearby airport. The plane had earlier taken off from the city of Trebujena and was due to land in Coria del Rio, a town which is close to Seville, Spain’s 13th busiest airport.
