Travelling in France? Weekend train trips in Côte d'Azur to be heavily discounted for 6 weeks
In something of a six-week super sale, TER PACA, the railway company that covers Provence and the Côte d'Azur region in France, is currently offering a 40% discount on weekend train trips.
Its routes cover a number of major cities along the coast, including Nice, Marseille and Toulon as well as the independent city-state of Monaco. Trains also go inland to Avignon, Arles, Aix-en-Provence and Grasse.
However, there are a number of stipulations for the discounted fares: tickets are only valid for a single day and passengers must buy aller-retour (return) tickets. Tickets cannot be used on high-speed TGV trains either. The offer will be available until Sunday, 19 February.
Highlights in the region include the remarkable forts of the Vieux Port in Marseille as well as the jumbled historic quarter of Le Panier. Arles is where Vincent Van Gogh painted some of his finest works and cut off his ear, while Aix-en-Provence is the epitome of the region with grand boulevards and café-lined streets.
For remarkable views of the Mediterranean Sea, head to the Grande Corniche near Monaco or duck into the independent city-state itself for startlingly opulent casinos. Nearby Nice boasts year-round sunshine and some startling seaside châteaux, while Grasse is the home of French perfume.
Note that tickets are can’t be exchanged and are non-refundable. Head to www.ter.sncf.com/paca for more information.
