Washington DC politicians and reporters face off in spelling bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is hosting a spelling competition that pits DC politicians against the city’s reporters.

The first spelling bee of this kind was held in 1913, and spectators included President Woodrow Wilson and members of his Cabinet. This year’s competition will have both individual and team competitions. There will also be a comedy performance before the main event as well as a cover band performing after the competition has finished.  A portion of the proceeds will go toward training programmes for journalists run by the National Press Club’s Journalism Institute.
