Washington DC cheapest city for a three-day mini-break in the US
Washington DC has emerged as the cheapest place for two people to take a three-night break this year.
Travellers heading to the capital for a mini-break will find real savings, according to the Post Office survey of 10 key cities in the country.
The Post Office information, compiled with the help of Brand USA which furnished the cost for tourist staples, claims that two people will find Washington DC cheapest of all with a rate for a three-night break there coming in at £1758 ($2347).
The findings show that by factoring in the cheapest hotel rates and free access to galleries and museums, Washington DC cheapest status meant it was £500 ($667) less expensive than Chicago - the dearest city surveyed.
In fact, the Windy City at £2223 ($2968) for two was a massive 29% dearer than the capital. New York was next best value in the survey, costing £1767 ($2359) for the three-night stay for two people. It also emerged from the survey as the second-cheapest in terms of prices for meals and drinks at £256 ($342) after New Orleans with an impressive rate of £219 ($292).
Philadelphia came third in the Us City Costs Baromoter at £1832 ($2,446). Next in line in the Post Office survey was Miami at £1965 ($2623) for two.
However, the south Florida city had the dearest tourist staples of the 10 cities ranked at £605 ($808). This came in at nearly £200 ($267) for drinks, meals and other essential purchases than Austin in Texas which was the cheapest at £406 ($542).
