Waikiki beach closed as heavy rains cause sewage spill on O‘ahu

Rains linked to Tropical Storm Kilo triggered half a million gallons of sewage to spill near Hawaii’s famous Waikiki tourist district, prompting city officials to close the area’s popular beach.

The rains caused sewage to flow from manholes and into the nearby ocean, generating concern that the waters are unsafe for swimmers. Officials are advising people to avoid the four-mile stretch of beach from Kapahulu Avenue in Waikiki to Point Panic in Kakaako for the next few days while water samples are tested for safety. A spokesperson for the Department of Emergency Services warned of the waters’ danger, citing possible infections or illness if anyone enters the closed-off area. Read more: nytimes.com
