Venice’s Ghetto gets revamp for 500th anniversary

Venice’s historic Ghetto neighbourhood is to receive a multi-million dollar makeover in the run up to the 500th anniversary of its creation. The Venetian Heritage Council, a philanthropic organisation founded by the fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, will spend around $12 million over the next year renovating and restoring the neighbourhood’s five 16th-century synagogues and Jewish Museum. On 29 March 1516 Venice’s leaders founded the Ghetto - designating it as a place for the city’s Jews to live in segregation from their Christian counterparts. Read more:
