Two new public holidays in Australia

One of Australia’s regions, Victoria, has had two extra holidays added to its annual calendar with Easter Sunday and Grand Final Friday announced on Wednesday.

The Friday prior to the AFL Grand Final in September sees the players parade through Melbourne’s city centre to much fanfare. The government said the holidays would add over $300m to the economy from increased spending on sporting events and tourism, not to mention the non-economic benefits of more leisure time for families. Not everyone was happy with the announcement however, small business owners who employ workers on awards that incur a penalty loading for working on public holidays were counting the cost. Victoria now has 13 days per annum, compared to eleven in NSW and ten in Queensland and Western Australia. Read more:
