US$21m ransom demanded for tourist hostages in Philippines

A militant group in the Philippines has demanded a US$21 million ransom for the four hostages they captured from a beach resort in September.

The hostages – a Filipino woman, two Canadian men and a Norwegian man – were taken from the resort on Samal Island in the country’s south, with a video released last month showing the four pleading for assistance. Meanwhile, the UK government issued a travel warning for the Philippines today following concerns that kidnap-for-ransom groups may be planning operations in north Mindanao and surrounding islands.
