Tidal swells will bring flooding to the Maldives
The Maldives is bracing itself for flooding next week after oceanologists warned of tidal swells linked to the perigean spring tide.
Sitting less than 2.4m above sea level, the islands are severely threatened by climate change, but the impending swells are a natural phenomenon, linked to the perigee of the moon, when the satellite passes closest to the earth. The Maldives have already suffered severe flooding this year, particularly in the heavily developed capital, Male, and more than 300 passengers were rescued on Monday after ferries were wrecked in high seas.
