Three US Coast Guard officers struck by lightning on Poás Volcano

This past Saturday afternoon, three US Coast Guard officers were injured by a lightning strike during a sudden thunderstorm that passed over Costa Rica’s Poás Volcano .

Two of the officers received first- and second-degree burns on their chest, stomach, and legs, and the third sustained burn injuries to her right leg; all have been hospitalized in Alajuela. It is the park’s policy to close the overlook in the event of dangerous weather, as lightning strikes in the area are common, but rangers were unable to clear the area in time. Read more:
