Thousands of flights grounded, millions affected by historic storm
Up to 58 million people could be seriously affected by the current weather system moving in along the north-east coast of the USA. CNN News reports that The National Weather Service is using terms such as “life-threatening” and “historic” to describe the storm heading into the area.
This first major storm may see up to three feet of snowfall on Boston and New York before it ends on Tuesday. Blizzard and winter storm warnings have been issued from Maryland through Maine and into Canada. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned: “I want everyone to understand that we are facing, most likely, one of the largest snowstorms in the history of this city.”
A total of 3,400 flights have been grounded so far. The New York Governer, Andrew Cuomo, advised that where possible, people should work from home because of the treacherous nature of the travel conditions.
