There's a new chance to experience the world’s best bar as it pops up in London
The “World’s Best Bar” is hopping across the pond this summer, as the Dead Rabbit, located in New York City’s Financial District, is popping up at Claridge’s in London for one week.
Starting on 15 August, the hotel in the city’s Mayfair neighbourhood will transform its bar into the second floor parlor of the 19th-century-style Irish pub. The normally sleek, polished Claridge’s Bar will have pub-style banquets and bar stools and ragtime music playing on the piano, while patrons peruse drinks on the Dead Rabbit’s comic book cocktail menu (which tells the story of John Morrissey, the leader of the Irish street gang from 1850s lower Manhattan for which the bar is named.)
While Claridge’s prestigious bar may be more accustomed to pouring vintage Champagne, the American bar’s pop-up menu will include Irish coffee, whiskey from its private collection (the largest in the U.S.) and signature cocktails with names like the Psycho Killer. They’re also bringing the food menu filled with both classics — shepherd’s pie and Cumberland sausage rolls — and more inventive plates like lobster devilled eggs. On 20 August, the bar will host a twist on the traditional Sunday roast, complete with a live music.
“We at Claridge’s are big fans of the Dead Rabbit and admire their impact on the cocktail scene not just in New York but also on a global scale,” Claridge’s Bar Manager Denis Broci tells Lonely Planet. “We’re excited to have Sean and Jack bring a level of New York edginess as well as Dead Rabbit mischief and mayhem to Mayfair.”
Hailing from Belfast, Ireland, where they both worked at The Merchant Hotel (helping it snag the title of World’s Best Cocktail Bar in 2010) Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry opened The Dead Rabbit in 2013. The charming pub is known for its meticulously-made drinks and unpretentious vibe, and has been lauded with a slew of awards, including the World’s Best Cocktail Menu at the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards, and top prize at the World’s 50 Best Bars in 2016.
The Dead Rabbit takeover is open at Claridge’s from 15-22 August.
