Intrepid Aussie couple travel to 65 countries - with their kids in tow!
A five-year-old and a seven-year-old from Perth may just be the best travelled kids in the world, after journeying to 65 countries.
Mia and Caius have been on the road non-stop for over three years with their mother Erin, a PR and social media marketer, and father Josh, a web developer.
The couple had decided that their 60-hour working week in Perth was unfulfilling, on top of the fact that it was costing them £8,300 a month in expenses. They tentatively decided to take off for six months with their two small children, and what was initially meant to be just an adventure, soon turned into a way of life. With their combined skills and the experiences they were having, it was natural that they would turn it all into a successful travel blog aimed at families - Travel with Bender.
Their Travel With Bender website has allowed them to travel across 65 different countries in the space of three years while documenting it, giving advice, and doing some public speaking on the back of it!
Their website is awash with handy tips, reviews of kid friendly places, warnings, and (most importantly perhaps) advice on how to make money last.
Among their chief pieces of advice for cutting down on cost is house sitting. In 2014 alone, the family house-sat almost 80 houses, and they say the average amount of money they spent that year was $5,000 a month! Their blog documents how they and the children have stayed in a variety of different types of accommodation, from boats, planes, Airbnbs, campsites, trailers, and even the occasional hotel.
But what Travel with Bender is really big on is kids travel.
Their blog is full of debunking myths about travel with children, pointing out how in fact, they are the most easily satisfied type of traveller, and are naturally better at it than adults. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Erin said, "Surprisingly most kids are really good travellers,' she said. 'Us adults find the 16-hour flights and long travel days much harder. Kids can sleep anywhere and as long as they have an iPad and food they are super happy." The children have travelled everywhere from Finland to Belize, from Canada to Thailand.
When it comes to education, the Bender family believe that their kids are learning more through travel than they could ever have done at home.
But what of the challenges?
The first thing they mention is night-life. There is no chance of seeing any night-life in a destination with Caius and Mia to be looked after. But the couple do admit that their children are sociable and so they get to have some alone time when they travel.
What the Bender family's main mission is about, is showing how travel with kids is not as hard as it's said to be, and that they are in fact brilliant travellers that can embark on a family adventure that doesn't break the bank.
On top of their sensible advice is the fact that they each manage to document their experiences on a truly beautiful instagram feed at @Travelwithbender
