A new 'storytelling hotel' in Tasmania will take you through the island’s amazing history
A new “storytelling hotel” in Tasmania will take you on a journey through the history and characters of the amazing island.
MACq 01 in Hobart delves into the people and stories of Tasmania through its design, rooms, and more. There are 114 rooms in the hotel, each exploring a different character from “our native people to our inventors, explorers, convicts and heroes”.
Each room will focus on an individual, with a unique illustration for each door and a room with artefacts and a design style that relates to that character.
When guests check in, they will be told a type of “Tasmanian trait” that their character reflects, and they will find out more about them when they get to the door. The hotel will also employ a team of full-time storytellers who can take guests on a journey through the hotel and through history. They will get the stories behind artefacts placed through the hotel and head out on an adventure to the Hobart waterfront, Sullivan’s Cove, Salamanca Place and beyond.
The hotel is located on Hobart’s Old Wharf and shows off views of working docks, Mount Wellington and River Derwent. The name MACq 01 comes from the hotel’s location on MacQuarie Wharf, where the original shipping shed that stood on the site was known as MacQuarie 1.
But the history won’t stop at the rooms – that ground floor will feature the Story Bar, where guests can indulge in drinks and enjoy entertainment and storytelling. The luxury room prices range from $400 per night up to $1400, but rates may fluctuate based on the season.
