Sri Lanka signs up for broadband by balloon
Sri Lanka has signed a deal with Google to supply universal broadband for the entire island via a network of helium balloons.
Part of Google’s Loon project, the scheme involves creating a computer-controlled cloud of floating telecom towers, which will act as an autonomous network high in the stratosphere above Sri Lanka. It sounds like science fiction but prototypes have already been tested and the system could soon be rolled out worldwide to provide internet access to remote communities. Read more: economynext.com
