Spain’s private rentals now outnumber hotel beds

Tourist accommodation provided by private rentals has overtaken the number of traditional hotel rooms available in Spain for the first time.

AirBnB and other similar sites accounted for 2.7 million beds last year, while hotels and other regulated lodgings offered 2.4 million. Barcelona’s new left-wing mayor, Ada Colau, recently announced her intention to temporarily put a freeze on new hotel developments and private rentals to get a handle on the burgeoning tourist market in Barcelona, where the number of rentals has spiralled out of control.
