An airline is dropping its signature snack – for passenger safety
Peanuts are an iconic in-flight snack, but many airlines have stopped serving them to accommodate passengers with allergies. However, one US airline that has always been intrinsically tied to the treat has become the latest to announce it is letting them go.
Southwest Airlines has been offering passengers peanuts since its creation in the 1970s and the simple snack had become deeply tied with the company’s brand. The simple travel perk of peanuts were even used in Southwest’s marketing through the years. However, serving the nuts on flights has become rarer in recent years, and other US carriers like United and American Airlines do not serve them.
Now that Southwest is dropping the snack, the airline told Lonely Planet in a statement that “peanuts forever will be part of Southwest’s history and DNA. However, to ensure the best on-board experience for everyone, especially for customers with peanut-related allergies, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue serving peanuts on all flights beginning August 1”. But there’s no need to fear – you will still get a free snack on board your flight. You may just have to settle for pretzels, or on longer flights, other treats like cookies or chips.
In the days of shrinking airline perks, travellers often feel quite attached to the free snacks on flights. While many people understand that taking peanuts off flights is an issue of safety for those with allergies, some snack-related changes have created more controversy. In fact, United recently announced that it would be replacing its stroopwafel snack with a maple-flavoured cookie. That was met with disappointment on social media, as travellers complained that they would miss the Dutch caramel and waffle treat. Luckily, stroopwafels will show up on the menu again, as the airline apparently rotates through morning snack options.
