Slovenia temporarily reinstates border controls with Hungary

Slovenia, which is part of the European Schengen border-free area, has announced that it is reinstating border controls with Hungary, which is also part of the Schengen area, in order to better manage the movement of refugees currently travelling through Europe.

On Tuesday Hungary closed its border with Serbia to migrants, increasing the likelihood that migrants who are trying to reach northern Europe will instead attempt to travel via Croatia and Slovenia. Croatia has kept its borders open, and on Wednesday over 900 refugees arrived in the country, with many more expected to follow. Slovenia has said that it will not establish special corridors for the transport of refugees, as this would contravene national and EU legislation. Slovenian prime minister Miro Cerar said, ‘We must manage the situation, help people in need, while treating them in line with the prescribed procedures and taking into account integration and security aspects.
