Six conservancies to be established in northern Kenya

London-based Tullow Oil and Africa Oil have signed a five-year agreement with the Turkana and Pokot communities to establish six community-run conservancies in northern Kenya.

The pact will see Lochakula, Lokichar, Kainuk and Katilu community conservancies in Turkana County and Pellow and Masol conservancies in West Pokot County established. The Pokot and Turkana communities will be jointly involved, which should enhance security in the bandit-prone region. The well-established pro-conservation lobby Northern Rangelands Trust will help the groups create a management committee, as well as train the scouts to monitor movement of wildlife and livestock within the regions.
