Shanghai to cancel Spring festival after Bund tragedy

A number of Chinese New Year events are to be cancelled in Shanghai after the New Year’s Eve crowd crush on the Bund in which 36 people died and 49 were injured. The main lantern festival held at Yuyuan Garden could be cancelled, while the Guyi Garden lantern festival has been cancelled and the Hongkou district has suspended all Spring Festival activities. Several of the city’s department stores have banned ‘themed activities’ and crowd control barriers have been set up in a number of popular tourist destinations. Read more:
