Winners of the National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year contest 2017 have been announced, with the chosen images showing incredible and unique moments captured by talented people in diverse destinations around the world.

The title of National Geographic Photographer of the Year went to Sergio Tapiro Velasco for his stunning image of lightning striking an erupting Colima Volcano in Mexico. His shot landed him the grand prize, a ten-day trip for two to the Galapagos Archipelago with National Geographic Expeditions.

Other winners were chosen across three categories that focused on cities, nature and people. The selection of winners included an image taken by Norbert Fritz depicting the modern interior of the city library in Stuttgart and an image taken in Konya by F. Dilek Uyar depicting a dance of the Whirling Dervishes. The full selection of winning images, as well as honourable mentions, is now available to view in full.
