School child finds ancient artefact on field trip

An Albuquerque fifth grader found a fragment of an ancient axe or maul during a recent field trip to the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center in New Mexico. Estimated to be over 1000 years old, the axe was discovered during a fossil hunting activity and handed over to a teacher. Steven Henley, environmental resource teacher at the Natural History Center, said it was extremely rare’ to find Native American artefacts as old as this in the area. The axe will be kept at the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center. Read more:
