Santee Sioux tribe to open South Dakota's first pot resort

The Santee Sioux will open the US’s first marijuana resort on the tribe’s reservation in South Dakota.

The tribe plans to grow, sell and allow buyers to smoke marijuana on an ‘adult playground’ resort the tribe hopes will be a new moneymaking model for tribes around the country. Similar marijuana clubs and resorts have opened in Colorado and Washington, but regulations prevent the business from selling directly to consumers, as well as prohibiting smoking in public places.

The announcement comes after the Justice Department outlined new regulations allowing Native American tribes to grow and sell marijuana under the same conditions as new states. Workers are already growing pot plants on the reservation, which is just north of Sioux Falls, and they plan to begin sales during a New Year’s Eve party at the end of the year.
