SA airport official suspended for soliciting ‘fines’

An airport official at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg has been suspended for attempting to solicit unwarranted ‘fines’ from minors.

It appears the official was trying to take advantage of the confusion relating to new immigration rules, one of which demands minors travel with unabridged birth certificates. According to the victims, whose documentation was vetted by their travel agent and approved by the airline staff upon check-in, the official claimed that the group did not have the correct paperwork to depart South Africa. He subsequently demanded a R500 ‘fine’. Read more: tourismupdate.co.za
