Italian art police have uncovered a massive hoard of 5361 stolen ancient artworks, which they estimate to be worth around €50 million. The discovery in Switzerland came after the arrest of a Sicilian art dealer, who was apparently the lynchpin in a multi-million euro smuggling network involving tomb robbers, dealers and buyers. The haul includes vases, statues and frescoes dating from the eighth century BC to the third century AD, and there is a possibility that more illegally traded items will be found by following paperwork in the art dealer’s possession.
