These airlines say they'll make it easier to travel between Australia and New Zealand
Australian airline Qantas and Air New Zealand have teamed up in a new deal that the companies say will make travel between the countries easier.
The airlines have announced a reciprocal codeshare agreement that means Qantas can add its code to an additional 30 routes from Air New Zealand’s domestic network, while Air New Zealand plans to add up to 85 routes on Australian routes with Qantas. A codeshare is a flight that is operated by more than one carrier, with tickets sold by each co-operating airline.
The benefits of the deal, according to the airlines, are that co-ordinating check-in and handling airports will mean shorter connection times. It will also allow for more onwards flights once you land and lead to faster journey times. If you are the type of traveller who loves a good membership perk, eligible customers will have access to a total of 36 domestic lounges in both countries on routes under the codeshare agreement.
The airlines are currently competitors, but Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said in a statement that the two national carriers share a goal of making travel easier. Both airlines are award-winning, with Air New Zealand taking the title of world’s best airline for 2018 from AirlingRatings.com. Qantas made the top 10 and also took home awards for the best domestic airline service, best catering and best lounges. Tickets for the codeshare services will be available by the end of July 2018, for travel from 28 October 2018.
Qantas also made headlines earlier this year when it launched a new 17-hour flight connecting London and Perth, Australia, making it the first direct flight between Europe and Australia. The new flight alone may have more people planning to finally take a trip to the region. Do you want to take an epic journey to Australia and New Zealand? Find out all about the region here.
