Presidents of China and Taiwan announce historic meeting in Singapore

The presidents of China and Taiwan have announced that they will hold a historic meeting in Singapore on Saturday.

The event will mark the first time that the presidents of the two nations have met since China and Taiwan were separated after the Chinese Civil War. Supporters of the Nationalist government fled to Taiwan after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949; China still claims Taiwan as one of its territories and hopes for reunification, while Taiwan claims its own independence. Taiwan’s president Ma Ying-jeou will meet Chinese president Xi Jinping with the aim of securing ‘cross-strait peace and maintain the status quo of the Taiwan Straits’, said a spokesperson from Ma’s office.
