The Costa Rican National Police and Environment Ministry confronted a group of poachers reported to have been harpooning sea turtles near Tortuguero National Park on Wednesday.
The three suspects were at sea when the arrests were made, and were spotted throwing the sea turtles overboard as authorities approached. All three turtles survived the ordeal with damaged shells and are now being treated at a rescue center. The arrest resulted from an initiative of the Costa Rican authorities to more strictly enforce poaching laws along Limón beaches.
