Paris is finally getting its first permanent fashion museum at the Palais Galliera
Paris may have been renowned as the home of style for centuries, but it is only now that it is finally getting its first permanent fashion museum. The museum will be called Palais Galliera, the Fashion Museum of the City of Paris, and it's all thanks to the support of the House of Chanel.
Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said that it was decided to create permanent exhibition rooms at the Palais Galliera to preserve the city's position as the capital of fashion and showcase its heritage. Up to now, the gallery has only housed temporary exhibitions. The House of Chanel is partnering with the city to finance the project, which it's estimated will cost €5.7 million.
The permanent exhibition gallery will be named the Gabrielle Chanel Rooms, after the founder of the House of Chanel, and will be located in the basement of Palais Galliera. The 7211 square feet area will open all year-round, and will be dedicated to the history of fashion from the 18th Century to the present day. The project also includes the creation of a learning workshop and a bookstore.
“This initiative represents a lasting commitment to creation and to the strength of Paris, which are at the heart of Chanel’s business,” said Chanel's fashion president, Bruno Pavlovsky. Fashionistas and style-lovers will surely be looking forward to visiting Paris in 2019, to admire what will undoubtedly be a wonderful addition to the French fashion scene.
