Established in 1949 by Professor Manuel Fernando Zárate and his wife Professor Dora Pérez de Zárate, the festival features a number of singers, musical groups and artists, and attracts a crowd from across the country. The festival is named for a popular Panamanian instrument, the mejorana, which is closely related to the Spanish guitar but is carved out of one single piece of wood and is slightly smaller. The festivities will continue until September 28, and includes a procession in honor of the Virgin, a celebratory parade, and the highly anticipated mejorana competition. Read more (in Spanish):,
