Oil company Shell to abandon Alaska Arctic drilling

Oil company Shell has announced that it will stop its drilling operations in the Arctic waters of Alaska’s coast after an exploratory well yielded disappointing results.

The decision came as welcome news from environmentalists, who have protested the drilling operations, which peaked this summer when kayakers tried to block Shell ships in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle. Shell has spent $7 billion in drilling off Alaska’s Arctic coast, but the company said the operations had a ‘disappointing exploration outcome’ and will cease exploration for the time being.
