New species of frog discovered in Madagascar already under threat
German zoologist Dr Mark Scherz and his colleagues have discovered a new species of diamond frog in the Sorata massif forests in the north of Madagascar.
Unlike its cousins which have short limbs, round bodies and hard ‘tubercles’ for digging on their hands and feet, this species named Rhombophryne longicrus has much longer legs and a different structure to its hips. The species is believed to be microendemic to the high altitude northern reaches of Madagascar which poses a great threat to its survival, particularly given the continued deforestation of these regions.
