New London concert hall could cost £278 million
A £278 million concert hall should be built on the site of the Museum of London, according to a study funded by the British government.
London’s two main concert halls, at the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall, lag behind their rivals in Birmingham and Gateshead as well as those in Berlin, Paris and Vienna. The proposed hall would feature a main hall and a more informal venue, and would have no formal front- or back-of-house areas, encouraging interaction between musicians and spectators. The current site of the Museum of London, near St Paul’s, will become available when the museum moves to a bigger site at Smithfield market.
