Nepal issues first passports for transgender citizens
Nepal has become the latest country to start issuing third gender passports to its transgender citizens.
Instead of ‘M’ for male or ‘F’ for female, Monica Shahi’s passport is marked with an ‘O’ for other, the first time the designation has been used in the Himalayan country. Despite being generally conservative when it comes to matters of sex and gender, Nepal has joined a small but growing club who have decided to recognise transgender people as a distinct legal entity, alongside Bangladesh, India, Denmark and Australia.
