Explore Europe's open waters in style with these stunning houseboats
Good news for travellers eager to get out and explore the stunning surroundings of Europe’s waterways in style; a Berlin-based company has created a range of stunning, modern houseboats available for purchase and rent that will be the perfect vessel for any adventure.
Called Nautilus, the company was founded by architect Andreas Hoffman, and custom-builds boats to the specifications and budgets of customers. According to Andreas, the idea was created after he saw a gap in the market. “We wanted to buy a houseboat, but there was nothing that met our expectations in design, functionality, quality and awareness of life. So we decided to design and build our own,” he told Lonely Planet Travel News.
Growing from that concept, the company now offers six different types of houseboat, including the namesake Nautilus, which has a beautiful floating fireplace, foldable gangways, a convertible roof system and room for up to eight adults and two children, as well as the seven-berth Nautino Mini, which has a picnic terrace and a rooftop area for sunbathing, and can also function as a docked lake home when it is not being driven. All of the houseboats come equipped with freezers, heating, showers, electric toilets and fitted kitchens, and Nautilus has even designed a futuristic, two-story holiday home that can sit in water on a dedicated dock, offering unrestricted views through its large, curved windows. Called the Ei-Home, it includes a 50-square-metre roof area that can house solar panels for added sustainability.
“Customers are very happy and impressed, and after just a few hours on the boats their stress and troubles are far away,” Andreas said. Understanding that most travellers do not have the money to shell out on houseboats, the cheapest of which starts at €86,554 ($107,403), the company created a chartering service that allows people to rent the houseboats in Grünheide on the Werlsee, Köpenick and on the Mecklenburg Lake District.
With production facilities in Berlin, Nautilus takes care of all stages, including planning, production and installation, and to date they have built over 30 houseboats for customers across the country, with plans to expand to other German-speaking countries and parts of Scandinavia.
More information on the houseboats is available from the official Nautilus website.
