Myanmar goes to the polls in historic elections

Elections will be held in Myanmar (Burma) on Sunday – the first openly contested election in the country for 25 years.

Candidates wrap up campaigning efforts on Friday ahead of a period of campaigning ‘silence’ prior to the opening of the polls. It is expected that the National League for Democracy (NLD) – the party of former Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi – will perform well in the vote, though Suu Kyi herself is banned from taking the office of the president due to having foreign-born children. Under Myanmar’s constitution, 25% of parliamentary seats will still be reserved for the military. Read more: bbc.co.uk
