Mumbai doctors go on indefinite strike

Thousands of doctors and health professionals in Mumbai and Maharashtra are striking in a dispute over safety for hospital staff and patients.

Public hospitals across the state are affected, and the government has appealed to the Maharashtra medical association to call off the strike, but doctors insist that the industrial dispute will continue until their demands are met. The focus of the dispute is on protecting medics from attacks by angry relatives, a common problem in India, and on ensuring that doctors are able to work in their areas of specialism, rather than being placed in wards where they lack expertise.
