Researchers aboard a deep-sea submarine have discovered a lost ship 2000 feet under water off O’ahu’s south shore. The ship, once named the Dickenson and then recommissioned as the USS Kailua, was used to maintain communications cables and submarines during WWII. When the ship’s service ended in 1946, it was scuttled but its final location was never recorded. The shipwreck will be nominated for inclusion in the National Registry of Historic Places.
