Man perishes 2km from safety in Western Australia heat

A man attempting to walk 48km after his car broke down in the Australian Outback died only 2km from safety. He was heading to the Windidda Station, a cattle ranch in the Wiluna region of Western Australia, when his car broke down on Sunday night. The man - carrying only a small can of water - set out on foot early on Monday, leaving his passenger with the car on the remote road. The passenger was found alive. The WA police have reminded people travelling in remote locations to stay with their vehicle if they become lost or break down.
