Maldives resort workers demand minimum wage

Nearly half of the 11,426 workers employed by resorts in the Maldives have signed a petition demanding a minimum wage of US$600 per month. Currently, the average wage stands at US$250 per month, yet most resorts charge guests upwards of US$400 per night for rooms. Tourism brings in vast amounts of money to the Maldives, but this is not reflected in the wages earned by ordinary Maldivians. This is not the first time that Maldivian resort workers have organised to protest unfair working conditions, with sporadic strikes in 2013 and 2014. Read more: minivannews.com
