Maldives plane turns around after bomb threat

A domestic flight in the Maldives was forced to turn around mid-flight on Friday after crew discovered a hand-written bomb threat on board. The note warned that the plane would be destroyed and demanded the release of prisoners at Maafushi jail, the main prison in the islands. No bomb was found when the flight returned to Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, but the threat is just the latest in a series of incidents where the tourist industry has been targeted by political groups. The islands are facing a growing problem with Islamist gangs, who are alleged to have links to the Maldivian police and army and the Islamic State movement in the Middle East. Read
